Have you ever had a strong feeling about something but wondered whether it was your intuition speaking or anxiety taking over?
Intuition and anxiety can sometimes feel surprisingly similar. Both can create strong emotional responses and influence the way we think and make decisions. However, they often communicate with us in very different ways.
What Does Intuition Feel Like?
Intuition is often described as an inner knowing — a feeling that something is right, wrong, safe or worth exploring, even when you cannot immediately explain why.
It may feel quiet, clear and steady, even when the message itself is uncomfortable.
Intuition doesn’t necessarily mean that you will feel completely relaxed. Sometimes your intuition can alert you to something that needs your attention. The difference is often in the way the message arrives. Rather than creating a constant stream of fearful thoughts, it can feel like a calm sense of knowing.
What Does Anxiety Feel Like?
Anxiety can feel much more urgent and repetitive.
It may focus heavily on what could go wrong, leading you to imagine different negative outcomes or replay situations repeatedly in your mind.
You might find yourself thinking:
“What if something goes wrong?”
“What if I’ve made the wrong decision?”
“What if they are upset with me?”
Anxiety can create a sense that you need to figure everything out right now, even when there is no immediate action required.
So, How Can You Tell the Difference?
When you’re unsure whether you’re experiencing intuition or anxiety, try pausing rather than immediately reacting to the feeling.
Ask yourself:
💙 Does this feeling seem calm or urgent?
💙 Is it guiding me — or frightening me?
💙 Am I responding to what is happening right now, or to something from a past experience?
💙 Is this feeling helping me understand the situation, or is it creating more and more “what if” scenarios?
Taking a moment to pause can create enough space to notice what is actually happening within you.
You Don’t Need to Have the Answer Immediately
One of the most helpful things you can do when you’re uncertain is give yourself permission not to know straight away.
You don’t have to make an immediate decision simply because a feeling has appeared.
Take a breath. Step back. Give yourself some space to reflect.
Sometimes, when we move away from the urgency of a thought or feeling, greater clarity can emerge.
Learning to recognise the difference between intuition, anxiety and past experiences can be an important part of developing greater emotional awareness and understanding yourself more deeply.
If you’re finding it difficult to understand your thoughts, feelings or reactions, holistic counselling can provide a supportive space to explore what’s happening beneath the surface.
